Cherry blossom season in Stockholm

Updated: May 30, 2021

I walked around Stockholm on a very sunny but cold spring day and searched for places to spot cherry blossoms. I ended up eating a piece of a delicious matcha cake in Café Koya with a cute totoro as my date.

You can't really see it from the pictures that I took this day, but it wasn't warm at all. It was one of those basic "oh the spring has arrived" -days with so much light and sun, but then the cold wind would hit you in the face and you wonder why you even bothered stepping outside. Nevertheless, cherry blossoms had started to bloom already since there had been a few very warm days, so I really wanted to enjoy them and spend my day off walking Stockholm in search for the best spots to see them.

Kungsträdgarden

One of the best places to see multiple cherry trees is definitely Kungsträdgarden in the city center. It was pretty crowded though and since we are living in a pandemic I tried to keep my distance to other people as much as I could. There are about 50 cherry trees in Kungsträdgarden that are separated in to two different alleyways on both sides of the park. The flowers bloom in different times on both alleys at least this year because the warm sun only reaches the eastern side of the park first, and then later spreads to the western side too where the cherry trees are more in the shadows of the buildings next to the park. The picture below was taken a little earlier when the cherry blossoms were not in full bloom yet - and it was actually a warm day.

Södermalm

As I walked around Södermalm I came across a few small spots with cherry trees. The first one was Bysigstorget and it was so much more quieter and calmer than Kungsträdgarden. There were not as many trees but it still looked gorgeous. If it would have been any warmer, I would've sat down on the cafe terrace outside with a drink.

After I continued my aimless wondering around Södermalm, I spotted a few small and lonely cherry trees also from Rosenlundparken and Tjurbergsparken.

Café Koya

After admiring cherry blossoms it was time to take a walk to a Japanese-inspired Café Koya that is located near Vasaparken. I had seen a picture of their layered matcha cake which I really needed to try. And boy was I glad I did - it was deliciousssss! I also had an extremely cute and fluffy but quite silent date for this delicacy moment.

Matcha and more matcha! My matcha cake was accompanied by matcha tea. The flavours very well suited together. I still remember when I tried matcha flavoured ice cream for the first time on my trip to Japan. It was definitely not one of my favorites, but as has happened with cilantro and dark chocolate, I slowly started to enjoy it so much that now I drink matcha tea every morning.

If you know any other places in Stockholm that I could take a walk to and see some more cherry blossoms, let me know!
